Prolactin signals a womans breasts to produce milk during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The human prolactin cDNA contains a 681-nucleotide open reading frame thereby producing a precursor protein with 227 amino acids. Prolactin also called luteotropic hormone LTH or luteotropin a protein hormone produced by the pituitary gland of mammals that acts with other hormones to initiate secretion of milk by the mammary glands.
